Steam Blanketing

When the circulation becomes poor, and the velocity of the boiler water reduces it is no longer
possible for the steam and water to stay thoroughly mixed
and so they separate out.
The flow becomes stratified, this leads to high concentrations of caustic and the associated problems.

Often examining the affected area reveals a defined water line with thinning of the metal in the top area of the tube.
In some situations superheating of the steam can occur and above temperatures 400°C direct
corrosion of the steel can occur with Iron Oxide and Hydrogen produced.

Steam blanketing can also occur in areas of low heat input to the boiler
