Biofilms: New Microbiology Test tube microbiology using planktonic cell cultures can no longer be considered as practical, applied science when studying a large number of medical microbiological infections. Microorganisms growing as biofilms are notoriously resistant to antimicrobials and antibiotics and are extremely difficult to kill - consequently, biofilms play a significant role in mediating chronic infections such as cystic fibrosis, otitis media, and artificial implant failure. Biofilms are also responsible for water contamination in critical systems, such as municipal water distribution systems, dialysis machines, and dental units. |
