BDS 6220 is a a broad spectrum concentrated quaternary based algaecide and biocide for use in recirculating cooling tower water systems, air washers and evaporative condensers.FEATURES BDS 6220 is effective over a wide pH range against algae, fungi, and slime forming bacteria typically found in these systems. Unlike most similar products, it is an exceptional wetting agent and, at normal use concentrations, it will cause only minimal foaming in the treated systems.BDS 6220 can be used in alkaline or acid systems and does not foam. BDS 6220 is compatible with most water treatment formulations but should not be used with soap, sulfated oils or anionic surfactants.
DESCRIPTION
BDS 6220 is especially effective in controlling algae, iron bacteria and other slime forming microorganisms that contribute to the biological fouling of cooling towers, water storage tanks and heat exchangers. TECHNOLOGY These cationic, surface active chemicals are organically substituted nitrogen compounds. The general structure of these microbiocides is shown left. "R" represents alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical substitutes containing 8 to 25 carbon atoms bound to a nitrogen atom. The total cationic portion is associated with a halide ion.
The electrostatic bonds create stresses in the cell wall, causing cell lysis and death. The quaternaries also cause cell death through protein denaturation, by distorting the permeability of the cell wall and reducing the normal flow of life-sustaining nutrients into the cell. TESTING AND CONTROL Control of BDS 6220 applications is based on visual observations or laboratory counts of organisms present. Field testing of total counts can also be arranged through your Water Services Ltd Representative. FEEDING BDS 6220 may be fed directly to the tower or by means of a chemical proportioning feed pump to the system. DOSAGE To control the growth of algae in the tower, BDS 6220 should be used
at a rate of 25 to 100 ppm in the system. The level of treatment should be
determined by the amount of microns growth present.
For specific information on feed rates, consult your Water Services Ltd representative. Consult label for directions on how to apply. Solubility Freely soluble in water, lower alcohols, ketones and glycols. Compatibility BDS 6220 is cationic and therefore incompatible with soap and anionic surfactants. It is compatible with nonionics, amphoterics and other cationics. BDS 6220, as supplied, may be corrosive to metals such as iron, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, lead, copper and tin, especially at elevated temperatures. Nonmetallic materials such as polypropylene, fluoropolymers, FRPs and coatings such as high-baked phenolics, epoxies and epoxy phenolics may be suitable. ENVIRONMENTAL The broad spectrum BDS 6220 allows the product to control slime forming bacteria and algae in recirculating water systems. The microbiocidal activity of BDS 6220 is usually exhausted before discharge to a receiving stream, because negatively charged contaminants, such as mud, silt and clay, neutralise the quaternary ammonium salts, rendering them harmless from an environmental discharge stand point. HANDLING AND SAFETY Avoid contact with skin and eyes and do not breathe fumes Wear suitable protective gloves and safety goggles. In case of contact immediately flush with water. After eye contact seek medical advice. Small spills can be flushed with water. Large spills should be collected for disposal. Do not reuse empty drum. Destroy by perforating or crushing. Before use review the Material Safety Data Sheet for additional information. |
